On 9th July President Graham, Vice President Terry along with Rotarians Sheila, Joy and Andrew, who are the Rotakids co-ordinators attended school to witness the unveiling and presentations to the two charities the Rotakids had chosen for this year, namely Air Ambulance and Forest Dog Rescue.

The children raised £200 in total at the Christmas and Summer Fayres which was split between the two charities, whose representatives were in attendance and gave a presentation of their work to the Rotakids.

What is a Peace Pole?

The words on the pole in eight languages are ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’. It conveys a message of a will to bring together people of all faiths, backgrounds and cultures to embrace the oneness of our planetary family. The Rotakids chose the languages of Ukrainian, Russian, Albanian, Dari, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic.

Peace Poles have been planted on every continent and in over 200,000 communities. They serve as reminders to cultivate peace in thought, word, and action while symbolising humanity’s shared desire for a world at peace.

This fits well into the mission of Rotary to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve global cooperation in solving international problems, and promote respect for human rights.

Rotary is not simply tackling the consequences which result from conflict, but addressing its fundamental causes which means overcoming poverty, inequality, lack of access to education and key resources.

In addition, Rotary’s work includes many of the issues of our modern world. For example, the prevention of modern slavery, empowering young people to tackle bullying and protecting victims of domestic abuse.

So the words on a Peace Pole in several languages are a constant reminder of the need for tolerance and cooperation to achieve peaceful coexistence around the world.
